The McCOOL FAMILY HISTORY Website
McCool is not a
common family name in Ireland. Despite the heroic status of Finn McCool, the legendary giant who is given credit for building the
Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland
and other amazing feats, it is only in County Donegal that the name can be found with any
degree of regularity. And it is in
County Donegal where this story begins. Aside from Finn, the first McCool that we know
about was named Michael. In 1809 he married Maria Flanagan and they had five children. The
third child, James, left Donegal and came to Canada in 1838 eventually becoming the
patriarch of the branch of the family whose history is outlined in the following pages.
